Carving
There are two sorts of relief work;
- Raised, alto (high) and bas (low) where the background is cut away leaving the stone standing proud.
- Sunken (incised), where the carving is below the surface of the stone.
Limestone can be used for both types of relief work, but slate looks best when used for sunken relief work.
